Historic Mississippi Avenue
Portland’s Historic Mississippi Avenue thrives on a rich and diverse history that expresses itself today in an inspired mix of community, business, homes and neighbors.
Originally home to the Clackamas Indians, the area was settled in the mid 1800s by shipyard workers and their families from Germany and Scandinavia. Later, African Americans displaced by the 1948 Vanport flood relocated to the neighborhood, further enhancing the rich tapestry of life and culture. Population and business grew as Northwest Native Americans and light industrial activity returned to the area by way of post-WWII relocation and other federal programs.
Today, “Mississippi” lays claim to being the most diverse neighborhood in Oregon. Recent revitalization efforts have preserved its distinct history and character while inviting new energy and ideas to the most vibrant and walkable streets in North Portland.
Businesses are largely local and independent, owned by people fulfilling their dreams. The result is an eclectic blend of creative-class business, boutiques and shops, music venues, wellness practitioners, restaurants and bakeries, bars and breweries, coffee shops and community spaces.
Historic Mississippi Avenue: diverse, progressive and eclectic. Welcome and enjoy!
